Walking & Running Safety

The city of Burlington has a lot of great walking and running trails that can be utilized year round. Walking and running may not seem like activities that require safety precautions, but it is just as important to remember to prepare yourself for any physical activity to prevent injury, getting lost, or any sort of harm. Following these tips are some ways to stay safe and feel confident on the trails in the area:

  • Always check the weather
  • Wear the appropriate clothing for the weather & activity
  • Bring food and water depending on duration and challenge level of the activity
  • Let someone know where and when you’re going if traveling alone
  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings
  • If you’d feel more comfortable with extra safety precautions, bring something like pepper spray or a whistle
  • Be aware of icy conditions in the winter for wooded trail areas and bring microspikes
  • Have your phone on you in case of injury or other emergency
