Skiing & Snowboarding Safety

While skiing and snowboarding is a very fun way to stay active and immersed in the outdoors during the winter, safety is very important to prevent serious injury or even death. If you are new to the sport then it is imperative that you learn some of the basic safety rules before heading to the mountain. If you are looking to begin skiing or snowboarding but don’t know where to start you can take lessons which are always available at resorts, learn from experienced and responsible friends or family members, and be proactive by reading up on resort/mountain safety! By following these safety tips and checking out the additional resources you should feel confident in hitting the slopes this season: 

  • Check the weather and dress accordingly
  • Bring all the necessary clothing and equipment (helmet, goggles, gloves, snow pants, jacket, layers, buff, poles, ski or snowboard boots, skis or snowboard)
  • Wear a helmet!!!!
  • Ensure that your gear fits and is put on properly before hitting the slopes
  • Bring food and water depending on your duration and level of activity
  • Be aware of other skiers and snowboarders while on the mountain
  • Skiers and snowboarders in front of you have the right of way
  • Familiarize yourself with the mountains trails and pre-plan runs before getting on the lift
  • Only do runs and levels that you are comfortable and capable of to prevent injury/worse
  • Look uphill and across from you when merging/starting trails
  • Know when your body needs rest or to warm-up and take breaks accordingly
  • Go with a buddy or let someone know if you are going alone
  • Have the mountains ski patrol phone number in your phone in case of emergency
