Hiking Safety

The Green Mountains and local peaks of Vermont offer a great way to exercise and connect with nature while at Champlain College. Hiking is so much fun but can also be dangerous, which is why it is very important to learn about the proper ways to prepare for a hike in the mountains. Some of these dangers include injury, getting lost, or worse. Dressing in the appropriate layers, learning how to read a map, trailhead, and blazers, and packing the necessary equipment is imperative to a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. Follow these steps to learn more about hiking safety:

  • Check the weather and dress accordingly
  • Wear the proper footwear for hiking: it is recommended to wear wool socks with hiking boots or trail running shoes
  • In the winter be sure to dress in warm layers and wear/pack things like snowpants, hat, gloves, gators, microspikes, and snowshoes to stay warm and dry
  • Bring plenty of water and food depending on the level and duration of the activity
  • Familiarize yourself with the trail beforehand and account for things like the total mileage, elevation gain, and estimated time of completion
  • Bring a map and compass to avoid getting lost or off trail
  • Follow the trail blazers to stay on trail
  • Let someone know where you will be hiking, especially if going alone
  • Bring a small first aid kit in case of emergency
  • Practice leave no trace (LNT) principles
